About
I'm an Animation Professor at LUCA School of Arts, campus C-mine in Genk, Belgium. I teach at the Re:Anima Joint Master in Animation and I'm a senior researcher at the Inter-Actions Research Unit. My research interests include philosophy of Technics, power relations inscribed in and reinforced by technical objects, and decolonial perspectives in animation. Previously, I was an Animation Professor at Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais (UFMG), in Brazil. MFA and PhD by the Graduate Program in Arts at EBA/UFMG. I'm also a free software advocate, animator, rigger and I also like to code. You can see some of my works and know a bit more about me at:
Yes, I had a blog. Haven't updated it since 2011. Anyway, if you need something from there I have kept backwards compatibility and you can read it below.
Kevin Langley`s blog is always a good resource on classic cartoons.
This time I bring his post about the Chuck Jones' classic Bear For Punishment. I never stop laughing when Junior tries to please his "Pa". =)
A cool thing I remember seeing in Chuck Jones DVD biography, Extremes and In-Betweens: A life in animation, is that Jones took inspiration on his own life to come up with the "breakfast in bed" gag.
The image which illustrates this post is from a background created for this cartoon made by the fantastic (and, unfortunately, not much known) Philip DeGuard. I tried so many times to find things about this great artist on the internet, but never found much more than his IMDB profile. =P
If you are like me, who buys every DVD of animation around and watch all the making-ofs to learn from the big guys, pay attention on what Andy Dolphin said on his blog.
I never paid the appropriate attention to watching the movies with running commentaries. After reading his article I've changed my mind. =)
And I'm still waiting my Ratatouille DVD I ordered a loooong time ago. =/
Saw today on Cartoon Brew the list of 12 movies submitted to the Academy Awards. Three will be chosen to run for Best Feature Animation. The list is:
“Alvin and the Chipmunks” “Aqua Teen Hunger Force Colon Movie Film for Theaters” “Bee Movie” “Beowulf” “Meet the Robinsons” “Persepolis” “Ratatouille” “Shrek the Third” “The Simpsons Movie” “Surf’s Up” “Tekkonkinkreet” “TMNT”
I hope Ratatouille wins (and also get nominated Best Feature), and the other selected are Surf's Up and The Simpsons Movie.

Also on Cartoon Brew, there is some discussion about the project I did along with Jovan last year. The good is that a lot of people understood our goal: to learn how to animate by following frame-by-frame the steps of a great master. There are some who hated our project, but we can never please everyone...
They've shown the challenges faced by the studio, along with their solutions and some magnificent concept art pieces, like the one which illustrates this post - created by Kristen Kawamura.
I usually like Seinfield's humor, and we all know how talented are artists at DreamWorks. I hope these talents together come up with a good movie. Later on this month (when the movie will be released here in Brazil) I'll find out.
