About

I'm an Animation Professor at LUCA School of Arts, campus C-mine in Genk, Belgium. I teach at the Re:Anima Joint Master in Animation and I'm a senior researcher at the Inter-Actions Research Unit. My research interests include philosophy of Technics, power relations inscribed in and reinforced by technical objects, and decolonial perspectives in animation. Previously, I was an Animation Professor at Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais (UFMG), in Brazil. MFA and PhD by the Graduate Program in Arts at EBA/UFMG. I'm also a free software advocate, animator, rigger and I also like to code. You can see some of my works and know a bit more about me at:

Blender Animation Book

I've written a book about Rigging and Animation in Blender for Packt Publishing. You can get the files here.

Old Blog

Yes, I had a blog. Haven't updated it since 2011. Anyway, if you need something from there I have kept backwards compatibility and you can read it below.

Just a kind reminder...

If you didn't watch it yet, go now and take a look at the trailer of Big Buck Bunny, the new open movie from Blender Foundation.

Soon it will be released along with Blender version 2.46. I believe that this event will change some CG paradigms, specially those who always related "Blender" and "open source" with the word "amateur". ;)

Blender Sequence editor upgrade

Everyone knows that Blender version 2.46 is coming. Nice features that this version will bring, like the ultra fast Approximate Ambient Occlusion and blurry reflections are also well known.

But there is another ultra cool upgrade planned for this release is related to the Video Sequence Editor.

When working with animation, we always need to edit the final video, make some corrections, transitions, et cetera, and Blender VSE is very handy in these situations.

For Linux users like me, it is an almost mandatory option since - in my humble opinion - it is the best open source video editor around. And I did try some other ones.

Basically the upgrades relate to how the strips are used, now in a much more intuitive and logical way, and with the fact that we can now use proxies!! =)

Yeah... this is REALLY cool. For example, in my little animation project, the video editing process easily includes 10 simultaneous strips. Until version 2.45, Blender use all original information on this - which is quite resource hungry. With the use of proxies, there are made low resolution copies of the original data for the editing work - making the overall process much quicker. These updates are like very needed by who works with Blender VSE. =)

Now, talking about animation: Carlos Baena has made a very cool compilation of video, audio and text information about the great Milt Kahl:

Wall-E final trailer and some other cool things

Is now online the final trailer of Pixar's Wall-E.

The new Ice Age movie already has a name and promo art: Dawn of the Dinosaurs.

Still on Blue Sky, there on YouTube is a 7 minute sneak peak of Horton Hears a Who (on theaters, March 14th), along with some short intro to the main characters:

And i saw a cool thing at Cartoon Brew: the sons of animator/director Abe Levitow have created a website dedicated to their father's works. Pretty cool things there! =)

Shawn Kelly free E-book

Every month for the last few years, the great Shawn Kelly (ILM and Animation Mentor co-founder) has been sharing his knowledge with cool articles called just "Tips & Tricks".

Now everyone can have a free e-book compilation of these precious animation articles. All you have to do is subscribe and download the PDF.

So...

What are you waiting for? ;)

From the newest to oldest animation

Almost a week without posting... sigh. =P

It seemed to me that the beginning of March would set a new era for me, with more free time to spend on personal things.

What happened was quite the opposite: my job took from me even my weekends' nights!

Fortunately, looks like it was just an exception, and from now on (I believe) I will have more free time to spend on my little short, and to make more frequent posts here. =)

But, what does it all have to do with this post's title?

Well... nothing, actually. But from the next paragraph on, it will have:

Some days ago I saw at Victor Navone's blog a post about a really really cool animation, developed with a new technique called "Stratastencil". It's experimental, with an interesting looking and worth checking out.

As a contrast, I read the news that the oldest animation known was discovered. It was made 5,200 years ago in some kind of bowl, in a place that is now in Iran.

Changing the subject a bit, but still talking about animation, here's a cool one made by an Animation Mentor graduate.
